R\u00e5olien best\u00e5r af tusindevis af forskellige organiske molekyler og er derfor ikke umiddelbar klar til brug. De velkendte olieprodukter som for eksempel benzin, petrolium og sm\u00f8reolie fremkommer, n\u00e5r r\u00e5oliens carbonhydrider adskildes i mindre grupper, som kaldes fraktioner.
